Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Remove a Microsoft Authenticator Account

Overview

Microsoft Authenticator is used to verify your identity when signing in to Northwood Tech resources protected by multi-factor authentication (MFA).

This article explains how to remove your Northwood Tech account from Microsoft Authenticator before setting up a new mobile device or after your MFA registration has been reset.

Key Information

  • Removing your Northwood Tech account from Microsoft Authenticator removes it only from the mobile device.
  • Personal or other work accounts in Microsoft Authenticator are not affected.
  • You may need to remove your Northwood Tech account before registering a new mobile device.
  • Your MFA registration may need to be reset before you can register a new device.
⚠️ Important: Only remove your Northwood Tech account if you are replacing your device or have been instructed to do so by the IT Service Desk.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, you'll need:

  • A mobile device with the Microsoft Authenticator app installed
  • Your Northwood Tech account configured in Microsoft Authenticator
  • Your MyCampus password

Instructions

Remove Your Northwood Tech MFA Account

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap your Northwood Technical College account.

     
  3. Tap the Settings (gear) icon in the upper-right corner.

     
  4. Tap Remove account.

     
  5. Tap Continue.

     
  6. Enter your MyCampus Password.
  7. Tap Yes.

     

Your Northwood Tech account has now been removed from the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Troubleshooting

I don't see my Northwood Tech account

Try the following:

  • Verify you're using the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • Look for an account using your @northwoodtech.edu email address if you renamed the account during setup.
  • If your Northwood Tech account isn't listed, it may have already been removed.

I can't remove the account

Try the following:

  • Close and reopen the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • Restart your mobile device.
  • Verify you're selecting the correct Northwood Tech account before choosing Remove account.

If the issue persists, submit a request with the IT Service Desk.

I accidentally removed the wrong account.

Try the following:

  • Sign back in to the affected account.
  • Complete that account's Microsoft Authenticator setup again, if required.
  • If you removed your Northwood Tech account by mistake, follow the Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) section from the First Time User Set Up article to register it again.

I'm setting up a new phone

Try the following:

  • Verify that your Microsoft Authenticator registration has been reset by the IT Service Desk.
  • If your registration has been reset, follow the Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) section of the MyCampus: First-Time Account Setup article to register your new device.
  • If your registration has not been reset, submit an IT Service Desk request before attempting to register your new device.
💡 Tip: If you still have access to your old device, update your MFA registration before switching to your new device whenever possible.
