Microsoft Teams: Disable Teams Auto-Start

Overview

This article explains how to disable Microsoft Teams from automatically starting when you sign in to Windows. Disabling auto-start can reduce background resource usage and give you more control over when Teams runs.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

  • A Northwood Tech account.
  • Access to Microsoft Teams.
  • A Windows computer with Microsoft Teams installed.

Before You Begin

By default, Microsoft Teams is configured to launch automatically when you sign in to Windows. While this can save time, some users may prefer to start Teams manually to reduce background applications or improve system startup performance.

💡 Tip: Disabling auto-start only prevents Microsoft Teams from launching automatically. You can still open Teams at any time from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.

Instructions

Disable Microsoft Teams Auto-Start

Disable the auto-start setting to prevent Microsoft Teams from opening automatically each time you sign in to Windows.

  1. Click the Start menu and search for Microsoft Teams.
  2. Click Microsoft Teams to open the application.
  3. Click the ... next to your profile picture.
  4. Click Settings.
  5. Click General.
  6. Uncheck the Auto-start Teams checkbox.
  7. Close the Settings window.
⭐ Best Practice: Leave auto-start enabled if you use Microsoft Teams throughout the day and want to receive messages and meeting notifications as soon as you sign in to Windows.

Troubleshooting

Microsoft Teams still starts automatically

  • Verify the Auto-start Teams setting is turned off.
  • Restart your computer to confirm the change has taken effect.
  • Ensure another startup management application isn't re-enabling Microsoft Teams.

I can't find the Auto-start setting

  • Verify you're using the Microsoft Teams desktop application.
  • Install any available Microsoft Teams updates.
  • Restart Microsoft Teams and check the settings again.

I'm still experiencing issues

  • Restart your computer.
  • Install any available Windows and Microsoft Teams updates.
  • Submit a Service Desk ticket if the issue persists.
