Overview
Microsoft 365 allows you to view previous versions of files and restore an earlier version when changes need to be undone. Version History can be especially useful when content is accidentally changed, deleted, or overwritten.
This article explains how to view previous versions and restore an earlier version of a file using Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
Key Information
- Version History can be used with supported Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Restoring a previous version replaces the current version with the selected version.
- You can review a previous version before restoring it.
- Restoring a previous version does not necessarily mean the other versions are deleted; the version history remains available.
⚠️ Important: Version History is available for files saved to OneDrive or SharePoint. Files saved only to your computer may not have previous versions available to restore.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure you have:
- A Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file
- Access to the file through OneDrive or SharePoint
- The file open in the Microsoft 365 application
Instructions
Restore a Previous Version
- Open the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file.
- Click File.
- Select Info.
- Click Version History.
- Select the version you want to review.
- Review the previous version.
💡 Tip: Before restoring a previous version, review the version carefully to make sure it contains the changes you want to keep.
- Click Restore if you want to replace the current version with that version.
