TransfrVR Career Exploration Kits

Overview

TransfrVR Career Exploration Kits provide virtual reality career exploration experiences that can be used by Northwood Tech staff at on-campus or off-campus events.

Each campus has a TransfrVR kit containing three sets of VR goggles and controllers, an Inseego network device, and additional batteries and charging cables.

This article explains how to request a kit, prepare the equipment, set up the VR experience, and use the equipment during an event.

Key Information

  • TransfrVR kits are available for Northwood Tech staff to use at on-campus or off-campus events.
  • Each campus has its own TransfrVR kit.
  • Each kit contains:
  • Three sets of VR goggles with controllers
  • One Inseego network device
  • Extra batteries for the controllers
  • Charging cables for the goggles
  • A laptop or computer is not required to use the VR kits.
  • A laptop or computer may be used if you want to display the view from the goggles on a projector.
  • Each controller and headset is numbered. Keep matching sets together.
📝 Note: The TransfrVR goggles were purchased through the HOMES grant. Staff using the equipment for an event must track the number of participants who use the goggles and report the total after the event.

Prerequisites

Before requesting or using a TransfrVR kit, you'll need:

  • An active Northwood Tech employee account.
  • A planned on-campus or off-campus event.
  • Access to the Technology Lending Agreement Form.
  • Adequate space for participants to safely use the VR goggles.
  • A projector and computer, if you plan to display the VR experience for others.

Instructions

Request a TransfrVR Kit

  1. Comlete the Technology Lending Agreement Form.
  2. Fill out the information on the form.
  3. Select "Transfr" VR Goggles.
  4. Click Submit.

Submitting the form will create a Service Desk ticket for the equipment request.

Charge the Equipment

Before using the goggles, make sure the batteries are charged.

  1. Plug the wall adapter into a power outlet.
  2. Connect the USB-C cable to the wall adapter.
  3. Connect the USB-C cable to the battery on the back of the goggles.
    • The USB-C port is located on the bottom of the battery.
  4. Turn on the battery.
    • The power button is located on top of the battery.
  5. Make sure the battery cable is connected to the goggles.
  6. Confirm the light next to the power button on the goggles is on.
  7. On the black dial of the battery, confirm the green light is on.
💡 Tip: The kit includes extra AA batteries for the controllers. Check the batteries before leaving for your event.

Set Up the TransfrVR Kit

Before beginning, verify that the kit contains all required equipment:

Three sets of goggles
Two controllers for each set of goggles
Inseego network device

Set Up the Inseego Network Device

  1. Plug the Inseego device into a wall outlet.
  2. Wait for the device to connect.
    • Green light: 4G connection
    • Blue light: 5G connection
⭐ Best Practice: Place the Inseego network device near a window when possible. Make sure it has a green or blue light before turning on the VR goggles.

Prepare the Controllers and Goggles

  1. Loop the controllers around each wrist.
  2. Put on the goggles.
  3. Turn the black dial counter-clockwise to make the head strap larger.
  4. Adjust the goggles so they fit comfortably.
  5. Turn the black dial clockwise to tighten the head strap.
    • The goggles should be snug but not too tight.
  6. Turn on the goggles.
    • Turn on the battery using the button on top of the battery.
    • Turn on the goggles using the button on the side of the goggles.

Configure the VR Environment

  1. Confirm the floor level.
  2. Set the operating boundary.
  3. Draw a boundary for participants to remain within.
    • A space of at least 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet is recommended.
  4. If the recommended space is not available, or a participant needs to remain seated, select a stationary boundary.
⚠️ Important: Make sure participants remain within the operating boundary while using the VR goggles. Provide adequate space for participants to move safely.

Connect to Wi-Fi

The goggles should automatically connect to the Inseego network device.

If the Inseego device cannot connect to the cellular network:

  1. Check the indicator light on the Inseego device.
    • A red light indicates that the device cannot get a signal.
  2. Connect the goggles to an available local Wi-Fi network instead.

Choose a TransfrVR Scenario

After the goggles are connected:

  • Career Exploration 2.0: The classroom code will usually be CR2U.
  • Career Exploration Facility: The system should automatically log in. Accept the usage agreement to continue.

The kit also contains a document describing the career exploration scenarios available through TransfrVR, including the duration of each scenario.

During Your Event

Track Participant Usage

The TransfrVR goggles were purchased through the HOMES grant, which requires reporting on equipment usage.

During your event:

  1. Keep track of the number of participants who use the VR goggles.
  2. After the event, complete the TransfrVR Event Reporting Form.
  3. Report the total number of participants who used the goggles.

Best Practices

  • Place the Inseego network device near a window when possible.
  • Allow the Inseego device to fully connect before turning on the goggles.
  • Keep the numbered headset and controller sets together.
  • Use the extra AA batteries included in the kit when needed.
  • Shut down the goggles during long breaks.
